According to the American Heart Association’s latest research, more than 2,200 Americans die of heart disease every day. [1]

That amounts to one death every 39 seconds!

Sadly, many do not know that heart disease is the #1 killer of women and there are several misconceptions about heart disease in women. This lack of knowledge could be putting you or your loved ones at risk.

Why the Nation Goes Red in February

The first Friday each February, American Heart Month, the nation comes together, igniting a wave of red from coast to coast. From landmarks to news anchors, neighborhoods to online communities; this annual groundswell unites millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke.

Heart-healthy Habits to Include in Your Daily Routines:

  1. Change your diet. Eat more fiber, including vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Your heart will thank you!
  2. Exercise regularly. Work your way up to doing at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. Cardio workouts like running and biking strengthen your heart and lower your blood pressure. Strength training conditions your heart and enhances your overall health too.
  3. Be consistent. Staying motivated can sometimes be a struggle but keeping remaining focused on your goals for health is crucial to maintaining long-term wellness for your heart and body. Start small with something you can easily accomplish. For example, try going to bed and wake up at around the same time each day.

Did You Know? Sleep deficiencies can contribute to many heart conditions. Read our icHealth Store blog Sleep and Cardiovascular Health: Do You Know the Connection?

  1. Learn to relax. It’s natural to feel anxious sometimes, especially in these chaotic times. Relaxation practices can help you to cope and enjoy more restful sleep. Take part each day in activities that help you relax.

Talk with your physician about prevention, screening, and treatment and wear red to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Because when we come together, there’s nothing we can’t do!
